SAFETY TIPS FOR JUMPING CASTLES
Every parent or caregiver wants their child’s birthday party to be one to remember, and a huge amount of planning goes into these occasions.Much thought and preparation goes into every aspect of the party with a checklist for just about everything.Food lists, activity lists, attendance lists, lists of presents… the list is endless (pardon the pun !)
But there’s one list that is probably the most important list – yet it’s one that is often overlooked. It’s the safety list.
Many parents who are hosting birthday parties feel stressed with the weight of responsibility of looking after so many children.Kids aren’t always predictable, and accidents can happen.Going through a comprehensive safety checklist will put parents at ease.
Safety is paramount, particularly when the party includes a physical activity such as a bouncy castle.
The following safety tips come from a prominent jumping castle hire company in Perth who have lots of experience in the inflatable business. The following advice comes from Soxon Jumping Castles, which arries a huge range of jumping castles including licenced Disney, movie and TV-themed ones.”Most accidents happen because of bad supervision or a lack of supervision, so it’s advisable to run through the checklist well ahead of time.”
ALWAYS
* Only hire equipment from a reputable bouncy castle hire company
* Make sure the equipment has a current test certificate
* Ensure there’s a safety switch to the power supply
• Ensure the jumping castle is set up by a trained operator who will either supervise the activity for the duration of the party, or who will train a responsible adult who will assume responsibility
• Keep an eye on the weather, and don’t use the jumping castle on a very windy day (absolutely no stronger than 25 knots)
• Check the anchorage is totally secure
* Check the equipment to identify any wear and tear.
• Use surround safety mats at the entrance and exit of the bouncy castle
• The surface area that the castle is going on should be at least 900mm wide, ideally grass but it can be another hard surface, such as concrete. Sand is not a suitable surface.
* Make sure the blower is at least 1.2 metres away from the inflatable
* Make sure there aren’t any sharp objects near the unit
* Remove all hard items of clothing and accessories, such as belts, shoes etc that could cause injury or damage the jumping castle
* The bouncy castle has to be supervised AT ALL TIMES by a responsible adult
• Deflate the bouncy castle after use to avoid unsupervised use
• Ensure that the operators have public liability insurance
NEVER
• Don’t allow older children to jump together with younger children
* Children (and adults) must not climb the walls
* Never deflate the castle while it is being used
* Don’t allow objects to be thrown onto the jumping castle
* Don’t put water deliberately onto the surface (ie. with a hose or bucket of water). Inflatables can be used in the rain, but the surface will be slippery, say Soxon Castles.Their bouncy castles all have a built-in sun and rain cover.
Soxon also said that parents should be cautious of inflatables that have ‘safety barriers’. Their opinion is that these barriers are dangerous because they collapse when someone leans on them, possibly causing injury. They recommend jumping castles with steps or a ramp.
This checklist from Soxon bouncy castles hire Perth will put a spring in your step at your next party!
